Navigating the post-PhD terrain is not straight forward. Drawing on a 10-year longitudinal study of the experiences of 48 early career researchers, this interactive session draws out key lessons about decision-making, the roles of strategy, resilience and luck, as well as the range of post-PhD careers that exist. By the end, participants will have set some action strategies for their career and professional development.

You will go away with

  • Action strategies to advance your career within or outside of academia.
  • A better understanding of how strategy, resilience and luck influence your career progression.
  • Evidence-based advice from an expert in postdoc careers.

Lynn McAlpine is Professor Emerita of Higher Education Development at the University of Oxford and Professor Emerita at McGill University.  She has received distinguished research awards for her work examining how individuals in professional and academic positions engage in and learn from their work. Her present research explores how doctoral students and post-PhD researchers navigate their career trajectories both in and outside the academy.

After the session there will be a drinks reception with nibbles, and a chance to network with fellow postdocs.

This event is free to attend. Places are now full, but you can register for the waiting list using the form below.
