Title:

Artificial peril or transformation? The potential of machine learning in medicine.

Synopsis:
This presentation highlights how AI and ML could enhance productivity, accuracy and delivery of healthcare, drug discovery and medical research, illustrating recent developments by reference to startups and selected papers. Developers, clinicians and organisations can underestimate regulatory, ethical and commercialisation challenges, the risks of malfunction, limited generalisation, and resulting harm. We explore these through case studies and provide an overview of important processes.

Speaker:
Dr Antony Rix is a serial entrepreneur, engineer and data scientist based in Cambridge. He began his career applying ML in telecoms, leading to his first startup, Psytechnics, and PhD. After 12 years in software development and consulting in communications, signal processing and digital health at TTP, he became founding CEO and investor at Cambridge University spin-out 8power. In 2018 he set up Granta Innovation to advise companies on novel applications of ML and AI. He is building a novel technology platform and business applying medical imaging and AI to cancer.
