Postdocs of Cambridge Society

PdOC and EPOC bring you a 3 hour workshop on "The Art of Seductive Storytelling" with author and former BBC News Correspondent, Simon Hall.

The art of seductive storytelling

There’s a story behind all research, whether purely academic or for business, and knowing how to tell yours can bring big benefits.

A resonant and memorable narrative of your work can help build your reputation, generate media coverage, attract funding, potential customers, and collaborators.
Learn how to tell your story in just three hours as author and former BBC News  Correspondent Simon Hall takes you on a journey through the art of seductive storytelling.

This workshop is intended for science and humanities postdocs, as well as aspiring and practicing postdoc entrepreneurs. You will learn about:

  • The golden thread of the narrative which should run through every story, whether a pitch, presentation, article or report, and how to find yours.
  • The critical importance of the opening of a story, and how to attract the attention of an audience from your very first words.
  • The subtle impact of titles, and how they can lure an audience into your story.
  • How to feed in resonant and memorable soundbites, which will help bring your story to life and stay with the audience.
  • Subtle marketing, and how to sell your work without it ever looking that way.
  • How to structure a story, to ensure your most important messages make an impact.
  • Planting hooks and signposts, to keep your audience engaged and interested.
  • Attracting media coverage by turning your story into a news release.
  • Photography and videography to help your work capture the audience’s imagination.
  • Adapting your storytelling strategy for social media, and making the best use of it to promote your message.

The workshop includes exercises, storytelling challenges and the opportunity to publish your polished story on the science communication platform Scheherazade Speaks Science (www.shespeaksscience.com).
