Physics behind the tabla: A talk and musical demo, followed by wine and cheese at Eddington.

The year 2020 marks the 100th year anniversary of the first scientific manuscript on a harmonic Indian drum known as the Tabla. Authored by Sir CV Raman in 1920, this work has long been overshadowed by his studies on scattering of light in matter which eventually won him the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics.

This talk is structured to be a tandem Lecture-Demonstration that will introduce the Indian Tabla, together with its rich rhythmic structure. It will showcase the instrument within the context of its first scientific work, and tell the story of how it inspired Sir CV Raman to make his Nobel prize winning scientific discoveries.

The talk will be followed by a short illustration of a few rhythmic cycles on the Tabla to accompany Indian vocals rendered by Dr Shreya Sinha.

About the Speakers/Artists

Dr Deepak Venkateshvaran is the Director of Studies in Physics at Selwyn College and a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Cavendish Laboratory.

Dr Shreya Sinha is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Geography. She learns Hindustani classical vocal music under Smt. Chandrima Misra of the Patiala Gharana and has many years of experience performing classical, semi-classical and light Indian vocal music.
