Panel: Institutional Perspectives

To support and augment the output of the meeting, a panel of leading funders and research institutions will contribute their perspectives on the future of postdocs and policy.

The panel discussion will take place at 14.00-16.00 on Wednesday 20 September, directly after the National Postdoc Meeting. All Meeting participants are welcome to attend!

Panel Members

Liz Elvidge

Liz Elvidge is the Head of the Postdoc Development Centre at Imperial College London. She is responsible for the support and development of the College's 2,400 postdocs and fellows. In 2017 she co-authored a book, "What every postdoc needs to know", a practical workbook aimed at final year PhD students and postdocs. She is also a member of the Expert Review Panel for the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.

 

Candace Hassall

Dr Hassall is the head of Researcher Affairs at the Wellcome Trust. She provides expert support to prospective applicants, Wellcome Trust-funded researchers and, importantly, the members of their teams. She is also working with others to develop a programme of activities to enhance the Wellcome’s support for the people they fund. She held a British Heart Foundation Basic Science Lectureship at University College London before joining Wellcome in 1996.

 

Linda Holliday

Linda Holliday is Director of Capacity and Skills Development at the Medical Research Council (MRC). She joined the MRC in 2005 and has had a variety of generalist and specialists HR roles. Linda has a specific interest in talent, career and leadership development, and is known for introducing new initiatives from scientific apprenticeship schemes through to senior research leadership development.

 

David McAllister

David McAllister is the Head of Skills and Careers at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), following a number of science policy and operational roles within BBSRC, including managing the technology and e-science portfolios. He currently leads the development of BBSRC’s skills and talent strategies ensuring bioscientists possess the skills and knowledge needed for careers in research and to underpin strategically important sectors of the UK economy. He also is strategic coordinator for BBSRC’s Global Challenges Research Fund, and is co-Chair of the RCUK Research Careers Network. He holds a degree and PhD in parasitology from the University of Glasgow.

 

Jo Dally

Dr Dally joined the Royal Society as Head of Policy (Research) in May 2016. In this role, she leads on policy issues ranging from Higher Education and Research funding and assessment, to the UK’s exit from the EU, the use of evidence in decision-making, and on understanding the UK research system and how it might evolve. Jo has a PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Cambridge where she was also a postdoctoral researcher.
