Developing Myself as a Leader

- a postdoc masterclass in leadership skills

In this masterclass you will work in small groups to explore the qualities of an effective leader. The objective is to create a practical plan to develop a leadership attribute or skill of your choosing. The training focuses on core transferable leadership skills, which are equally relevant to a continued academic career and careers in industry, social enterprise or public sector. You will be introduced to research from the Center for Creative Leadership; a basic coaching model and a format to effectively communicate your leadership skills. During the session will draw on your existing skills as a leader and your experience of being led. You will discuss your expectations of good leadership; explore your opportunities to lead and clarify your existing skills set.

This masterclass is open to all postdocs working in the University, Colleges or University Partner Institutes.

Pre-work activity:  All attendees are asked to complete a very short homework task before the Masterclass.  A copy will be emailed to all registered postdocs in advance of the session or you can download here.  

Wifi access will be required during this masterclass.  UniOfCam and eduroam are available in the Postdoc Centre.  Please ensure that you can use either network before the session.  Further details about wifi at the University of Cambridge.

About the speakers:
Caroline Broad and Rach Maggs have been delivering skills training to PhD and Postdocs for over fifteen years.  Caroline specialises in team effectiveness and communication skills with a focus on industry academia and cross-disciplinary collaboration.  Rach specialises in personal and team effectiveness and is a professional coach focusing on aspects of life, career and personal performance with individuals.  She works in academia, the private sector and with private coaching clients.   Both deliver interactive workshops focused on drawing out and building on existing knowledge and skills.
